EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Idolatry of King Solomon" we are transported back in time to witness a scene of great significance. At the center, we find King Solomon himself, kneeling before an idol shaped like the god Jupiter, his hands delicately holding an incense burner as an offering. The weight of his actions is palpable as he succumbs to the allure of false gods. To the left of Solomon stand two priests, their expressions filled with both concern and resignation. On the right side, we see the retinue of the king, observing this forbidden act with mixed emotions. Amidst them stands a man accompanied by two graceful greyhounds, perhaps symbolizing loyalty amidst moral decadence. Adding to this spectacle are a group of dancing women on one side - their movements embodying temptation and indulgence. In contrast to these figures lies a backdrop of ruins that serve as a stark reminder of what can be lost when faith is misplaced. This thought-provoking artwork was masterfully created by Jacob Hogers between 1635 and 1655 using oil paint on canvas. It captures not only King Solomon's struggle with idolatry but also serves as a timeless reflection on human weakness and our eternal quest for meaning beyond ourselves.
