Francisco de Goya Portrait Jacques Galos 1826

Francisco de Goya: Portrait of Jacques Galos, Francisco de Goya, 1826, Oil on canvas, Goya was one of the great portraitists of his time. In 1786 he was appointed court painter for the Spanish crown, turning out important commissions for royalty and aristocracy. Here, in this more casual portrait painted much later in his career, Goya depicts a member of his inner circle. The sitter is Jacques Galos, the governor of a bank in Bordeaux, France, who handled Goyas personal finances. Goya had settled in Bordeaux in 1823 after fleeing Spain to escape the oppressive rule of King Ferdinand VII. The inscription at lower left translates to Don Santiago Galos, painted by Goya at the age of 80 in 1826. Overall: 21 3/4 x 18 1/4 in. (55.2 x 46.4 cm)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Francisco de Goya's masterpiece, "Portrait of Jacques Galos" painted in 1826. Goya, renowned as one of the greatest portraitists of his time, was appointed court painter for the Spanish crown in 1786 and produced significant works for royalty and aristocracy. However, this particular painting represents a more intimate moment later in his career. The subject of this casual portrait is Jacques Galos, a trusted member of Goya's inner circle. Galos served as the governor of a bank in Bordeaux, France and also managed Goya's personal finances. In 1823, seeking refuge from King Ferdinand VII's oppressive rule, Goya settled in Bordeaux where he continued to create remarkable art. The inscription at the lower left corner translates to "Don Santiago Galos" indicating that it was painted by an eighty-year-old Goya himself. The sizeable dimensions of this oil on canvas piece measure approximately 21 3/4 x 18 1/4 inches (55.2 x 46.4 cm), emphasizing its significance. Goya skillfully captures Galos' likeness with meticulous attention to detail while infusing the portrait with an air of familiarity and warmth. This print not only serves as a testament to Goya's exceptional talent but also provides us with insight into his personal relationships and experiences during this period.
