Flower arranging Children playing two flower-arranging women
Flower arranging, Children playing and two flower-arranging women in a room adjacent to a garden with blooming chrysanthemums. A third woman hangs a sign on which the name Hokusoan is written. Top left and upside down under the entire performance, poems by different poets. This surimono was probably issued on the occasion of the appointment of the poet Hokusoan as a member of the jury of poets, or due to his name being changed. The surimono is folded in half over the middle, so that the poems form the back of the performance. Ryuryukyo Shinsai (mentioned on object), Japan, 1800 - 1810, paper, copper powder, colour woodcut, h 410 mm × w 570 mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene filled with beauty and activity. In a room adjacent to a lush garden adorned with blooming chrysanthemums, two women are engrossed in the art of flower arranging. Their skilled hands delicately arrange vibrant blossoms, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and grace. Amidst this serene setting, children can be seen playing joyfully. Their laughter fills the air as they chase each other amidst the fragrant flowers, adding an element of liveliness to the scene. A third woman is captured hanging a sign on which the name Hokusoan is written. This suggests that this surimono was created to commemorate either Hokusoan's appointment as a member of the jury of poets or his name being changed. The top left corner showcases poems by different poets, elegantly displayed upside down under the entire performance. These verses add depth and meaning to the artwork, intertwining literature with visual aesthetics. Folded in half over its middle, this surimono cleverly conceals its poetic treasure within. The poems form the backside of this mesmerizing performance piece by Ryuryukyo Shinsai. Created between 1800-1810 in Japan using paper, copper powder, and color woodcut techniques; this artwork from Liszt Collection exemplifies both artistic mastery and cultural significance. It transports us into a world where nature's beauty harmoniously blends with human creativity and playfulness - truly capturing an enchanting moment frozen in time.
