Born in Crete, El Greco studied under the Venetian master Titian before settling in Toledo, Spain, where he received many important commissions. This painting is a reduced version of El Grecos original canvas for the Cathedral of Toledo. It shows the dramatic moment before the Crucifixion when Christs executioners strip him of his red robe. While one figure in the foreground prepares the cross, a mob, cast in darkness, eagerly anticipates the violence. Overall: 29 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. (74.9 x 44.5 cm)
