This print from the Liszt Collection showcases a mesmerizing design of knife handles that tells the timeless story of temptation, Adam and Eve, and memento mori. Created between 1580-1600 by Johann Theodor de Bry, a Netherlandish artist born in Strasbourg, this engraving is a true masterpiece. The blackwork sheet measures 4 15/16 x 125 x 101 cm and features two knife handle designs with intricate scenes depicted under arches at the top. On the left side, we see Eve being tempted by a snake, reminiscent of Heinrich Aldegrever's work as described in Bartsch VIII3. A man and a rose are also present in this scene. Seated figure representing death is shown on the other handle panel. This skeletal figure serves as a reminder of mortality and is based on Jan Saenredam's interpretation influenced by Hendrik Goltzius' style. The composition skillfully combines various elements to create an evocative narrative that explores themes of desire, sinfulness, and mortality.
