Alcedo Guttatus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Alcedo Guttatus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

Alcedo Guttatus - A Glimpse into the Exotic Himalayan Avian World

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases an exquisite engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, titled "Alcedo Guttatus. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains". The enchanting artwork transports us to the majestic peaks of the Himalayas, where a diverse array of avian wonders reside. John Gould's fascination with birds blossomed when he encountered a collection of avifauna from the Himalayan mountains at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by this encounter, he embarked on a monumental project – publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played an integral role in bringing these magnificent creatures to life through her intricate drawings, skillfully transferring them onto large lithographic stones known as "Gould plates". Her attention to detail and artistic prowess breathe vibrancy into each feathered subject. The Alcedo Guttatus depicted in this engraving is truly mesmerizing. Its strikingly colored plumage captivates our gaze while its long tail adds an element of elegance. Against a carefully crafted background, every minute marking and pattern on this bird is meticulously captured, showcasing both its beauty and unique characteristics. This early 19th-century masterpiece offers us not only a glimpse into nature's marvels but also serves as a testament to British artistry during that era. As we admire this close-up view of Alcedo Guttatus, we are transported back in time to witness Elizabeth and John Gould's dedication to capturing the essence of these exotic creatures for generations to come.
