Berlin Wall Collection

The Berlin Wall was a barrier that divided the city of Berlin from 1961 to 1989. It was built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to prevent East Germans from fleeing to West Germany during the Cold War. The wall consisted of concrete walls, barbed wire, and guard towers along its length of approximately 155 kilometers. Many people lost their lives trying to cross over or escape through it. In November 1989, after months of protests and political changes in Eastern Europe, the GDR announced that citizens could travel freely across the border. This led to thousands of people crossing over and eventually resulted in the fall of the wall on November 9th, marking a significant moment in history for both Germany and Europe as a whole.
