The Woolton Baths closed to the public in 2010 and a campaign began to raise funds for repairs and restoration. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Woolton Baths, a true gem of Victorian architecture nestled in the heart of Liverpool's urban village. Designed by renowned Manchester architects Horton & Bridgford, this stunning building opened its doors to the public in 1893 and quickly became a beloved hub for sport and recreation. The corner entrance of Woolton Baths, also known as Woolton Swimming Pool, is captured here in all its Baroque Revival glory. Constructed with local red sandstone, it exudes an air of grandeur that perfectly complements its surrounding historic neighborhood. Once a thriving center for health and leisure activities, these baths closed their doors to the public in 2010. However, thanks to a passionate campaign aimed at raising funds for repairs and restoration, there is hope that this architectural treasure will be revived once again. Woolton Baths holds great significance as one of the few remaining examples of late 19th century village swimming baths. Its Grade II Listed status further solidifies its importance within Merseyside's sports heritage. As we admire this remarkable image captured by s imon Inglis on behalf of Historic England, we are reminded not only of the beauty found within our architectural past but also the philanthropic spirit that fueled projects like these – exemplified by Holbrook Gaskell's generous funding contribution as a local chemical manufacturer.
