Magi EMM01 / 01 / 029

St Tysilios Church, Sellack, Herefordshire. Watercolour, by Elsie Matley Moore, of a stained glass window in St Tysilios Church, depicting one of the Magi. The index card to this artwork reads: One of the Magi in a window made up in 1630 by Richard Scudamore. Other parts of the window contain 15th and 16th century glass. This and the other late panels are interesting as some of the few 17th century examples of church glass. It is obvious how decadent the art had become. 3rd January 1942

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable watercolour painting by Elsie Matley Moore, capturing the essence of St Tysilios Church in Sellack, Herefordshire. The focal point of this artwork is a stunning stained glass window depicting one of the Magi, or wise men, from biblical times. Created in 1630 by Richard Scudamore, this particular window stands out among others due to its incorporation of 15th and 16th century glass fragments. The index card accompanying this artwork sheds light on its historical significance as one of the few surviving examples of 17th-century church glass. It also alludes to the decadence that had permeated art during that period. This unique blend of medieval craftsmanship and Renaissance influences makes it an intriguing piece for art enthusiasts and historians alike. Elsie Matley Moore's talent lies in her ability to capture not only the intricate details but also the ethereal beauty emanating from within this ancient work of art. Through her brushstrokes, she transports us back to a time when faith and devotion were expressed through visual storytelling. As we gaze upon this aerial view captured on January 3rd, 1942, we are reminded once again why Christmas holds such deep meaning for many people around the world. This illustration serves as a testament to our shared cultural heritage and reminds us that even centuries-old artworks can continue to inspire awe and wonder today.
