EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of St Lawrence, Pegwell Bay in Kent. Taken between 1945 and 1965, it showcases a picturesque scene that could easily be mistaken for an idyllic postcard. The focal point of the image is the magnificent Pegwell Village Hotel, which dates back to the mid-19th century and was later expanded in 1896. With its three storeys and attic, this architectural gem consists of two blocks connected by a striking central tower adorned with a large jettied belfry featuring round-headed openings. Crowned by a dome roof and ball finial, the tower adds an air of grandeur to this already impressive structure. To the right of the hotel stands another charming building - the Pegwell Inn. Built and modified simultaneously with its counterpart, this three-storey establishment faces towards the seafront while boasting one storey on its road-facing side. Together, these historic buildings form an integral part of Thanet's heritage. The photograph also highlights the natural splendor surrounding these man-made marvels; with Pegwell Bay stretching out into infinity behind them. The bay's tranquil waters create a serene backdrop against which holidaymakers can enjoy their leisurely activities. John Pennycuick has masterfully captured not only architectural excellence but also encapsulated a sense of nostalgia within this single frame – transporting viewers back to a time when life seemed simpler and more carefree along Kent's scenic coastline.
