EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Manston's High Street during a significant era between 1945 and 1965. The focal point of the image is St Catherines Church, standing tall and proud in the background, while a war memorial takes center stage on the junction of High Street and Preston Road. This poignant monument was unveiled on May 24th, 1921, by Wing Commander WH Primrose DFC to honor the memory of 17 brave men from this village who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War I. The photograph beautifully showcases a slice of history frozen in time. The quaint Victorian architecture lining both sides of High Street adds character to this picturesque scene. One can almost imagine locals going about their daily lives - perhaps stopping at an inn for a pint or engaging in friendly conversations along this bustling street. John Pennycuick skillfully captured not only the physical structures but also the spirit that resides within them. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Manston's rich heritage and its deep connection to those who fought valiantly for their country. It stands as a testament to their bravery and selflessness, forever etched into the fabric of this tight-knit community.
