EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to Quarry Hill, Leeds, capturing a moment of both beauty and loss. Standing tall amidst the rubble from the recent demolition of houses in New Church Place is St Mary's Church, an Anglican commissioners church built between 1823-1825. Its imposing presence dominates the frame as it proudly showcases its architectural grandeur. Eileen Deste skillfully captures this scene from the north west, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details of St Mary's Church. The sharpness of her lens reveals every delicate curve and ornate feature that adorned this historic place of worship. It serves as a poignant reminder of the craftsmanship and dedication that went into constructing such magnificent structures. However, beneath its majestic facade lies a sense of melancholy. The photograph was taken during a period when St Mary's Church faced an uncertain future; sadly, it would meet its demise around 1980. This image thus becomes more than just a snapshot frozen in time – it becomes a testament to change and impermanence. Through Eileen Deste's lens, we are transported to an era long gone but forever preserved through her artistry. As we gaze upon this print by Historic England, we can't help but feel connected to both the past and present – appreciating not only what once stood proudly at Quarry Hill but also reflecting on our own ever-evolving urban landscapes.
