EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1941, amidst the chaos of World War II. The image showcases Derby's old Assembly Rooms, standing proudly in Market Place. However, during this period of turmoil, their purpose had been transformed into something entirely different - an Army Recruitment Centre. Originally built in 1774, these historic Assembly Rooms held a significant place in Derby's cultural heritage. Yet, as war engulfed the nation, patriotism took precedence over leisurely gatherings and social events. The building became a symbol of resilience and determination as it played its part in supporting the military effort. Sadly, fate dealt a cruel blow to this iconic structure when it fell victim to a devastating fire in 1963. Nevertheless, from its ashes rose a new chapter for Derby's Assembly Rooms. In 1977, they were reborn with renewed splendor and grandeur. George Bernard Mason skillfully captures this momentous era through his lens; his photograph immortalizes not only the physical transformation but also represents the spirit of wartime Britain. It serves as a poignant reminder that even during times of great adversity, communities come together to support their country and protect what they hold dear. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, we are transported back to an era where sacrifice was commonplace and unity prevailed against all odds – forever etched within history's pages.
