Trafalgar Square 21760_02

TRAFALGAR SQUARE, Westminster, London. Aerial view. The Battle of Trafalgar took place in 1805 and destroyed Napoleons hopes of invading Britain. The square was planned in the 1820s but was not named after the battle until 1830. The fountains were fed by an artesian well until the late 19th century, but are now fed from the mains and powered by electricity. The square has seen many political rallies, as well as being the scene of boisterous celebrations and outpourings of national pride on New Years Eve and major football matches

EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view of Trafalgar Square, located in the heart of Westminster, London, showcases the historical significance and grandeur of this iconic landmark. Named after the famous Battle of Trafalgar that occurred in 1805, where Napoleon's dreams of invading Britain were shattered, this square was planned in the 1820s but officially named after the battle only in 1830. The focal point of this image is undoubtedly the majestic fountains that adorn Trafalgar Square. Originally fed by an artesian well until the late 19th century, these fountains now derive their water from mains supply and are powered by electricity. They serve as a symbol of both beauty and technological advancement. Throughout its existence, Trafalgar Square has witnessed numerous political rallies and gatherings. It has also become synonymous with exuberant celebrations on New Year's Eve and during major football matches when national pride spills over onto its hallowed grounds. This print from Historic England Archive captures not just an aerial perspective but also encapsulates a sense of naval history intertwined with urban development. The juxtaposition between historic events like the Battle of Trafalgar and modern-day city life is strikingly evident here. As we gaze upon this remarkable image, we can't help but marvel at how Trafalgar Square continues to stand as a testament to British resilience while remaining an integral part of London's cultural fabric.
