EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to August 1932, capturing the magnificent Staplecross Smock Mill in all its glory. Located on Bodiam Road, Staplecross, Ewhurst, in the picturesque East Sussex countryside, this Georgian windmill stands tall against a clear summer sky. Built in 1815, this smock mill served as a vital corn mill for over a century before ceasing operation in 1916. Despite its rich history and significance to the local community, it was sadly demolished in 1951. However, remnants of its past can still be seen today as the base has been transformed into a charming house. The photographer Francis Matthew Shea skillfully frames the mill from the southwest perspective, allowing us to appreciate its elegant structure and intricate details. The smock mill's traditional design is evident with its timber frame covered by weatherboarding and topped with an eye-catching conical roof. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our architectural heritage. This print serves as both a testament to human ingenuity and an invitation to explore our past through these remarkable structures that once powered our communities.
