EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to April 1929, capturing the timeless beauty of Newington Mill in Ramsgate, Kent. The image showcases the impressive smock mill standing tall against the backdrop of a clear sky. Adjacent to it is a chimney, adding an industrial touch to this picturesque scene. Newington Mill was originally built in 1830 as a smock mill but underwent significant changes over the years. By the time this photograph was taken, its sails had not been used since around 1904. However, it continued its operation as a roller flour mill powered by a gas engine. The architectural style of this structure reflects Georgian influences with its elegant design and traditional features. As one gazes at this snapshot frozen in time, they can't help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into constructing such an iconic windmill. Sadly, Newington Mill met its demise circa 1960 when it was demolished. Nevertheless, through photographs like these preserved by Historic England and captured by Francis Matthew Shea, we are able to relive moments from our past and appreciate the rich history embedded within our landscapes. This print serves as a reminder of how industries have evolved throughout history while also highlighting the importance of preserving our heritage for future generations to cherish and learn from.
