EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1932, capturing a timeless view of Cross-in-Hand Windmill in East Sussex. Standing proudly against the picturesque backdrop, this windmill is believed to be the Old Mill, one of two windmills that once graced Cross-in-Hand. The photographer, Francis Matthew Shea, skillfully frames the mill from a southwest angle, allowing us to appreciate its grandeur and intricate design. The post mill's sails are motionless in this frozen moment in time; however, one can almost imagine them gracefully turning with the gentle breeze that sweeps across the countryside. Cross-in-Hand Windmill was not just a landmark but also an essential part of local industry as it served as both a corn mill and a windmill. Its presence would have been vital for grinding grain into flour for nearby communities. As we gaze at this historic image today, we are reminded of how much has changed over time. The landscape may have transformed since then, but thanks to photographs like these preserved by Historic England, we can still connect with our past and marvel at the ingenuity of those who came before us. Francis Matthew Shea's lens has captured more than just an architectural wonder; he has immortalized a piece of history that will continue to inspire generations to come.
