Flume construction JLP01_08_096291
Grain Power Station, Grain, Isle of Grain, Medway, Kent. A view towards the power house and main chimney during the construction of the Isle of Grain Power Station, showing the five flumes for the cooling water system in the foreground.
The Isle of Grain Power Station was an oil fired power station built in the 1970s by multiple contractors, including John Laing and Son Ltd. When the power station opened in 1979, it had the second tallest chimney in the UK at 244 metres high. The power station has now been demolished and the chimney was destroyed in September 2016. A new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station has been built at the site

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring construction of the Isle of Grain Power Station in Medway, Kent. The image showcases the immense scale and complexity of this oil-fired power station built in the 1970s. Standing tall in the background is the main chimney, which at a staggering height of 244 meters, was once one of the tallest chimneys in the UK. Intriguingly, what steals our attention in this photograph are five flumes prominently displayed in the foreground. These flumes were an integral part of the cooling water system for this colossal power station. Made from concrete and tunnels, they symbolize both innovation and engineering prowess. However, time has taken its toll on this iconic structure as it now stands demolished. In September 2016, even its majestic chimney met a similar fate. Yet amidst these changes lies hope for progress - a new Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power station has been erected at this very site. This remarkable print not only serves as a testament to human ingenuity but also reminds us of our ever-evolving energy needs and how we adapt to meet them. Preserved by Historic England Archive, it offers us a glimpse into an era when ambitious construction projects like these shaped our industrial landscape forever.
