Allscott Sugar Beet Factory JLP01_08_060536

Allscott Sugar Beet Factory, Allscott, Wrockwardine, Telford and Wrekin. The concrete batching plant at Allscott Sugar Beet Factory seen during the construction of two sugar silos.
A sugar beet factory was at Allscott from 1927 until it closed in 2007. Laing built two sugar silos here in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation who were the owners of the site. Each silo was able to store 10, 000 tons of granulated sugar and at the time they were constructed, they were the tallest that Laing had built so far using sliding formwork

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Allscott Sugar Beet Factory during a significant moment in its history. The image showcases the concrete batching plant at the factory, as it undergoes construction for two impressive sugar silos. These silos were built by Laing in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation, who owned the site at that time. The scale of these sugar silos is truly remarkable, with each one capable of storing an astonishing 10,000 tons of granulated sugar. In fact, when they were constructed, they stood as the tallest silos ever built by Laing using sliding formwork techniques. The Allscott Sugar Beet Factory was a vital part of this community from 1927 until its closure in 2007. This photograph provides a glimpse into the industrial heritage and significance of this once-thriving factory. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and technological advancements in construction during the 1960s. Preserved within Historic England's archive collection, this image offers us an opportunity to reflect on our past and appreciate how industries like sugar production have shaped our landscapes over time. It reminds us of the hard work and innovation that went into creating such iconic structures while honoring their historical importance to Telford and Wrekin's heritage.
