Cranes JLP01_08_096485

Graythorp, Hartlepool. A view of the construction of an oil platform at Graythorp, showing cranes around the emerging structure.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield. The cranes on site at Graythorp included two 509 Revolver cranes, capable of lifting 813 tonnes, and six Manitowoc cranes imported from America

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the bustling construction scene at Graythorp, Hartlepool in the early 1970s. The image showcases a remarkable view of an oil platform being built, with cranes towering over the emerging structure. Laing Pipelines Offshore played a pivotal role in transforming this site into the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock, replacing the old William Gray Shipyard. This ambitious project aimed to construct fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's North Sea Oil Project. As progress surged forward, around one thousand skilled workers were employed on-site by 1972. The photograph highlights two impressive cranes that dominated the skyline at Graythorp - two mighty 509 Revolver cranes capable of lifting an astounding 813 tonnes each. Additionally, six Manitowoc cranes imported from America lent their expertise to this monumental endeavor. With its rich industrial history and engineering prowess on full display, this image is not just a snapshot but also a testament to human ingenuity and determination. It serves as a reminder of how innovation and collaboration can shape our world. This extraordinary print from Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into an era when dreams took tangible form amidst steel beams and diligent laborers who worked tirelessly to bring them to life.
