Operation Rich Man JLP01_08_062436
COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. A group of RAF staff on the roof of Coventry Cathedral watching a RAF Belvedere helicopter making an approach towards the cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Coventry Cathedral during Operation Rich Man. The image showcases a group of Royal Air Force (RAF) staff gathered on the roof, their eyes fixed on an approaching RAF Belvedere helicopter. Operation Rich Man was a joint endeavor between RAF personnel and Laing staff, aimed at placing an 80ft bronze spire atop the new cathedral. This particular snapshot freezes time just before the monumental task is executed. The anticipation is palpable as everyone watches with bated breath. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans that day, as gusty winds forced the postponement of lowering the 1/2 ton cross onto the spire. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration amidst challenging circumstances. The scene itself is filled with historical significance - not only does it capture a pivotal moment in Coventry's architectural history but also symbolizes resilience and hope after World War II devastated much of the city center. Taken in the 1960s by A© Historic England Archive, this powerful image encapsulates both bravery and teamwork against all odds. It reminds us that even in times of adversity, humanity can come together to create something truly remarkable.
