PORTISHEAD B POWER STATION, PORTISHEAD AND NORTH WESTON, NORTH SOMERSET. A view from the boiler house roof towards chimney no.1 on the construction site of Portishead B Power Station, showing two Laing workers repointing the chimneys brickwork.
Portishead B Power Station opened in the mid 1950 s. Portisheads original power station, which was completed in 1929, became known as Power Station A. Portishead B was built on part of the Great Western Railways original Portishead Railway Station, which was demolished and rebuilt closer to the centre. Portishead B had eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers. The power station closed in 1982, and the chimneys were demolished in 1992

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment in time at the construction site of Portishead B Power Station in North Somerset. The image showcases two dedicated Laing workers diligently repointing the brickwork on chimney no. 1, as seen from the boiler house roof. Portishead B Power Station, which opened its doors in the mid-1950s, played a significant role in supplying power to the region. Its predecessor, known as Power Station A and completed in 1929, earned its distinction with this new addition. Interestingly, Portishead B was constructed on part of the original Portishead Railway Station owned by Great Western Railways. With eight coal-fired and four oil-fired steam boilers, Portishead B operated for several decades before closing its doors permanently in 1982. Sadly, these iconic chimneys that dominated the skyline were demolished ten years later in 1992. This remarkable photograph not only documents an important chapter in our industrial history but also pays tribute to those hardworking individuals who labored tirelessly to bring electricity to countless homes and businesses during this era. It serves as a reminder of their dedication and expertise that shaped our modern world. Photo credit: Historic England Archive | © Joh
