EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the construction of Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station. Two dedicated workers can be seen fearlessly perched on the surface of the reactor dome, diligently working to complete this monumental engineering project. Taken on the day when the primary containment for the reactor was topped out, this image symbolizes a major milestone in nuclear energy history. On 9th July 1992, as construction progressed, attention shifted towards building the secondary containment structure with a deliberate air gap of 3 meters between two layers of concrete. The tireless efforts and expertise displayed by these workers epitomize their commitment to ensuring safety and efficiency within this power station. Their presence atop the reactor dome is a testament to their unwavering dedication. In October 1993, after months of hard work and meticulous planning, an auspicious ceremony marked the completion of Sizewell B's secondary containment structure. This achievement not only solidified its place as an engineering marvel but also highlighted its importance in harnessing nuclear energy responsibly. Through this remarkable photograph from Historic England Archive, we are transported back to witness firsthand how human ingenuity and determination shaped our modern world. It serves as a reminder that progress often requires immense effort and collaboration across various disciplines - civil engineering being just one among many involved in creating sustainable sources of power for future generations.
