EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous occasion at the Paternoster development in the City of London. Renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin is seen admiring a stunning bronze sculpture of a shepherd and sheep, created by the talented sculptor Elisabeth Frink. The photograph was taken on the day of its grand unveiling. During the 1960s, John Laing Construction Limited, Trollope and Colls Limited, and George Wimpey and Company Limited collaborated to bring about the Paternoster development. This ambitious project included multiple office blocks, a bustling shopping precinct, an expansive piazza, and an innovative three-level car park. In July 1975, as part of their contribution to European Architectural Heritage Year, Paternoster Development commissioned Elisabeth Frink to craft this magnificent bronze statue. Yehudi Menuhin had the honor of revealing this masterpiece to the world. Amongst those present at this significant ceremony were Sir Kirby Laing and Geoffrey Anderson – then managing director of the Development company. The image not only showcases two great artists in their respective fields but also symbolizes collaboration between different disciplines coming together for a common purpose: celebrating architectural heritage. It serves as a reminder that art has no boundaries – whether it be music or sculpture – both have immense power to inspire awe and admiration for generations to come.
