Hospital reception JLP01_10_26702
West Dorset County Hospital, Dorchester, West Dorset. A view from the doorway into the main entrance lobby at West Dorset County Hospital.
In the early 1980s plans were developed for a modern hospital to replace the old Dorchester Hospital, at a new site to the west of the town centre. A joint venture of Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited were responsible for Phase I of the construction project, which was to provide 149 beds and included maternity and geriatric units, two operating theatres and a pathology and X-ray department. Phase I on the north part of the new site was completed in the late 1980s under the name West Dorset County Hospital. When Phase II on the south part of the site was completed in the mid 1990s, the whole site became known as Dorset County Hospital

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the hospital reception of West Dorset County Hospital in the early 1980s. Stepping through the doorway into the main entrance lobby, one is greeted by a scene that exudes modernity and efficiency. The hospital was part of an ambitious plan to replace the old Dorchester Hospital with a state-of-the-art facility located west of the town center. The construction project was divided into two phases, with Phase I completed in the late 1980s by Laings South West Region and Haden Young Limited. This initial phase included essential facilities such as maternity and geriatric units, operating theaters, and a pathology and X-ray department. With 149 beds available, this new hospital aimed to provide top-notch medical care to its community. As time progressed, Phase II on the south part of the site was finished in the mid-1990s, resulting in what we now know as Dorset County Hospital. The completion of both phases transformed this location into a comprehensive healthcare institution serving residents throughout West Dorset. Through this photograph's lens, viewers can appreciate not only its historical significance but also marvel at how far medical advancements have come since then. It serves as a reminder that hospitals are more than just buildings; they are places where lives are saved and communities find solace during challenging times.
