LORDS CRICKET GROUND, St Johns Wood, London. Founded on this site in 1814 the "Home of Cricket" is owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), and is host to Middlesex County Cricket and the England and Wales Cricket Board. The match in progress is the first day of Middlesex versus Hampshire in the County Championship. Photographed 8th August 2006

ALEXANDRA PALACE, Muswell Hill, London. Alexandra Palace was built in 1873 as a North London counterpart to Crystal Palace in Sydenham, South London. Set in Alexandra Park it was intended as a venue for public recreation, education and entertainment. It contained a concert hall, art galleries, a museum, lecture hall, banqueting room and a theatre. In 1936 it was used as the television headquarters of the BBC. The BBC radio mast is still in use as shown in this aerial photograph from August 2006

NATIONAL SPORTS CENTRE, Crystal Palace Park, London. The National Sports Centre opened in 1964 as the home of UK athletics. The stadium has a capacity of 15, 500 but can be expanded to 24, 000 with temporary seating. It was superceded as the premier UK athletics stadium by the 2012 Olympic Stadium. From the 1860s Crystal Palace Park has had an illustrious sporting history, having hosted top class football, rugby, cricket and grand prix motor racing until the early years of the 20th century
