EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Chelsea Barracks, a historic military establishment that once stood proudly on Chelsea Bridge Road in London. Taken by renowned photographer Herbert Felton in 1960, this image showcases the barracks as they appeared from the south during their final years before demolition. Built between 1861 and 1863, these Victorian-era buildings exuded an air of strength and authority. The intricate architectural details, visible even in monochrome, speak to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Rows of windows line each facade while chimneys punctuate the skyline, hinting at bustling activity within. Sadly, shortly after Felton immortalized this scene with his lens, these magnificent structures were lost forever. Demolished around 1960-61 for reasons unknown to us today, their absence leaves behind only memories and photographs such as this one. As we gaze upon this poignant snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded not only of the physical loss but also of the history that unfolded within those walls. This was a place where soldiers trained and lived; where stories were written and shared; where lives were shaped by duty and camaraderie. Herbert Leo Felton's photograph serves as both a tribute to Chelsea Barracks' former glory and a reminder that even our most cherished landmarks can be swept away by progress or circumstance. Let it stand as a testament to all that has been lost but should never be forgotten.
