EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Mermaid Street in Rye, East Sussex, during the early 1900s. The image transports us back in time to a quaint and picturesque street scene that exudes history and charm. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, our eyes are drawn up the steep incline of Mermaid Street. A bustling crowd of people can be seen leisurely strolling uphill, their figures blending seamlessly with the historic houses lining either side of the cobbled road. The horse-drawn cart descending down adds an element of movement to this otherwise serene setting. The focus of this photograph is undoubtedly on the iconic Mermaid Inn standing proudly at the forefront. Its first floor is adorned with beautiful tile hanging while its ground floor boasts sturdy brickwork beneath a jettied timber-framed structure above. Interestingly, it appears that over time some changes have been made to restore its original architectural features – tiles removed to expose timbers and timber framing replaced on the ground level. Katherine MacFee's expert eye has captured not just a moment but also a glimpse into Rye's rich past. This print serves as a testament to both her skill as a photographer and her appreciation for preserving historical landmarks like Mermaid Street for generations to come.
