EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of Masons College, located on Paradise Street in Birmingham. Established in 1880 by Josiah Mason as a college of science, its primary aim was to prepare graduates for local industries. The curriculum focused on subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, natural sciences, physiology, and engineering. The impressive building featured in this photograph served as the backdrop for countless students' educational journeys over several decades. However, it met an unfortunate fate when it was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the construction of a new public library. Architect J A Cossins's vision is evident in every intricate detail of this magnificent structure. From its towering spires to its ornate façade, Masons College exudes an air of academic excellence and architectural brilliance. Bedford Lemere and Co. , renowned photographers during the Victorian era, expertly captured this image in 1897. Their keen eye for detail allows us to transport ourselves back in time and appreciate both the historical significance and aesthetic beauty preserved within this photo print. As we gaze upon this snapshot from history now housed within the Natural History Museum's collection at Birmingham BL14248 (MASONs COLLEGE), let us reflect on how institutions like these have shaped our communities throughout time.
