EDITORS COMMENTS
["This aerial photograph, taken by Aerofilms Ltd in May 1947, offers a breathtaking view of North Shields Docks, a bustling maritime hub located in North Tyneside, England. The image showcases the intricate layout of the dockyard, with its labyrinthine network of graving docks, quays, and shipbuilding facilities. At the heart of the scene lies Smith's Docks, a historic complex of graving docks that date back to the late 19th century. These docks, with their distinctive rectangular shape, were designed to accommodate large ships for extensive repairs and maintenance. The Bull Ring Graving Docks, located to the north of Smith's Docks, are also visible in the photograph. These docks were expanded in the early 20th century to accommodate larger vessels and were named for their distinctive horseshoe-shaped quay walls. To the south of Smith's Docks lies the Albert Edward Dock, which appears to be undergoing construction in this photograph. This dock, which was built between 1925 and 1929, was designed to accommodate ocean-going liners and was named in honor of King George V. The dock's construction is evident in the photograph, with large piles of rubble and construction materials visible alongside the partially completed quay walls. The photograph provides a fascinating snapshot of North Shields Docks during a period of transition. The aftermath of World War II had left many dockyards in need of repair and expansion, and North Shields was no exception. This image offers a glimpse into the ongoing efforts to modernize and adapt the dockyard to meet the changing needs of the maritime industry."
