EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial photograph, taken by Aerofilms Ltd in 1966, offers a breathtaking view of Canada Dock in Rotherhithe, Southwark, London. The image showcases the vast expanse of the dock, surrounded by the tranquil waters of the Thames. The intricate network of quays and cranes, designed to facilitate the loading and unloading of cargo ships, is a testament to the dock's rich maritime history. Canada Dock, originally known as Surrey Dock No. 2, was constructed between 1869 and 1872. It was one of the last docks to be built in the Surrey Commercial Docks complex, which was a significant hub for trade and commerce in London during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The dock was named after the Prince and Princess of Wales, who were the Duke and Duchess of Canada at the time of its opening. The photograph captures the dock in its prime, with numerous ships anchored in the harbor, waiting to be serviced. The cranes, which were a common sight in the docks during this era, stand tall and ready to help load and unload cargo. The surrounding area is dotted with warehouses and industrial buildings, which were essential for the storage and processing of goods. Despite the passage of time, Canada Dock continues to be an important part of London's maritime heritage. Today, it is home to a thriving community of businesses and residents, and serves as a reminder of the city's rich history as a global trading hub. This photograph, taken over five decades ago, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past and the evolution of this historic dock.
