Handley Page O-type biplane CC025293
A Handley Page O-type biplane in a field, Horndean, Hampshire. These aircraft saw service during the First World War, initially with the Royal Naval Air Service to operate against shipping in the North Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. An improved version entered service with the RAF in 1918-19, but after the war several entered civilian service as transport aircraft. Photographed between 1918 and 1930 for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. This was originally thought to be a Vickers Vimy but an eagle-eyed viewer spotted the misidentification - thank you

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Handley Page O-type biplane, a remarkable aircraft that played a significant role during the First World War. The image captures the biplane in all its glory, standing proudly in a vast field in Horndean, Hampshire. Originally utilized by the Royal Naval Air Service to combat enemy ships in both the North Sea and Eastern Mediterranean, these planes were true heroes of their time. Following the war's end, an upgraded version of this aircraft was introduced into service with the RAF between 1918 and 1919. However, it is worth noting that several of these planes found new purpose as civilian transport aircraft after their military service. The photograph itself dates back to sometime between 1918 and 1930 when it was taken for London Midland and Scottish Railway. Initially mistaken for a Vickers Vimy by many experts, it was only through keen observation from one eagle-eyed viewer that this misidentification was rectified - we extend our gratitude to them! This stunning image serves as a testament to not only the technological advancements made during this era but also pays homage to those who bravely operated these magnificent machines amidst tumultuous times.
