Eridge Castle BL13512

ERIDGE CASTLE, Rotherfield, East Sussex. Interior of the Smoking Room after a fire, looking towards the fireplace. This picture shows the damage caused by the fire and the soot blackening on the plaster ceiling and panelled walls. The 2nd Earl of Abergavenny had converted Eridge House into a Gothic castle in 1792. This is no more and was replaced by a Neo-Georgian mansion in the 1930s. Photographed by Bedford Lemere in 1896

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of a devastating fire that engulfed Eridge Castle in Rotherfield, East Sussex. The image showcases the interior of the Smoking Room, with its once-grandeur now marred by extensive damage caused by the flames. The soot-blackened plaster ceiling and panelled walls serve as haunting reminders of the destructive force unleashed upon this Gothic castle. Originally known as Eridge House, this architectural gem was transformed into a magnificent Gothic castle in 1792 by its owner, the 2nd Earl of Abergavenny. However, time has not been kind to this historic structure. In the 1930s, it was replaced entirely by a Neo-Georgian mansion that stands today. Photographed in 1896 by Bedford Lemere, this image offers a glimpse into both the beauty and tragedy associated with Eridge Castle's history. It serves as a testament to human resilience and our ability to rebuild even after facing immense challenges. Bedford Lemere's skillful composition allows us to appreciate both the grandeur that once graced these walls and also reflect on their fragile nature. This photograph is an invaluable record of an important moment in England's architectural heritage – one where fire tested but did not destroy Eridge Castle's spirit or significance.
