EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Odeon Cinema in Birmingham, standing proudly on New Street. Illuminated against the night sky, its tower sign and billboard shine brightly, beckoning movie enthusiasts to step into a world of cinematic wonder. Originally known as the Paramount Theatre when it opened its doors in 1937, this luxurious venue was part of a small chain of opulent theaters. However, in 1942, Odeon took over and rebranded it with their name. A testament to its enduring popularity, the cinema underwent renovations in 1965 to ensure an even more immersive experience for filmgoers. The image freezes a moment in time before significant changes occurred at this beloved establishment. In 1988, shortly after this photograph was taken by Norman Walley, the cinema closed temporarily for subdivision into six screens – adapting to meet evolving audience demands. Not content with resting on its laurels, additional screens were added in both 1991 and 1998. Transporting us back to mid-20th century Birmingham's vibrant entertainment scene, this picture house exudes retro charm that captivates nostalgia seekers and history buffs alike. The Odeon Cinema remains an enduring symbol of leisurely nights spent enjoying movies under starry skies – an integral part of our cultural heritage that continues to bring joy and excitement today.
