EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of (Yushukan) Kudan Tokyo in the early 20th century. The Yushukan, a remarkable Japanese military and war museum nestled within the Yasukuni Shrine, stands tall behind a lush canopy of trees. Unfortunately, this very building depicted here met its demise during the devastating 1923 Tokyo earthquake. Established in 1882, the Yushukan holds great historical significance as Japan's first and oldest war and military museum. Maintained by the shrine itself, it serves as a memorial to honor the brave souls of soldiers who fought valiantly on behalf of their Emperor. In this enchanting scene, we see a glimpse of daily life outside the museum grounds. A group of women dressed in traditional costumes stroll through a vibrant garden adorned with blossoming cherry trees. Their colorful attire adds an extra touch of elegance to this picturesque setting. The print's soft tint enhances its nostalgic charm, transporting us back to Japan's rich cultural heritage during the early 1910s. This postcard-like image is truly a testament to both nature's splendor and human resilience amidst turbulent times. As we admire this snapshot from history captured by The Print Collector, let us reflect upon how traditions intertwine with progress and how even after destruction comes rebirth – just like these cherry trees that continue to bloom year after year at (Yushukan) Kudan Tokyo.
