EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled "Yakut Woman," is a lithograph from the album "A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka," created by Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev in 1856. The album, which is part of a larger collection in the Prints Division of the National Library of Russia, documents various expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East during the late 19th century. Bulychev, a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, compiled this album, which consists of 64 finely drawn illustrations, most in color. This particular image shows a Yakut woman, a native of the Siberian region of Yakutia, also known as Sakha Republic. She is depicted in a traditional Yakut costume, wearing a long, fur-trimmed coat and a tall, conical hat called a "chapan." The woman is shown riding a bull, with a young child in tow, as they traverse the rugged, rural terrain. The meeting of frontiers between the Russian settlers and the indigenous peoples of Siberia and the Russian Far East was a significant aspect of the region's history during this time. The anthropological and ethnographic study of these ethnic groups was an essential component of these expeditions, and Bulychev's album provides a valuable record of the diverse peoples and cultures encountered during these journeys. The image's composition, with the woman's strong, determined profile and the contrast between the white bull and the black background, makes for a striking and evocative portrait of life on the Siberian frontier during the 19th century.
