Wreck of "The Amelia", on the Hermitage Rocks, Jersey, 1856. The coast of Jersey, with its surrounding groups of rocks, and its banks and shoals, is frequently the scene of wrecks; and vessels are often stranded upon its rocky ledges, notwithstanding its bays and coves afford good anchorage...the barque Amelia...was hourly expected to break up; but, by the sudden change of weather, the vessel was extricated from her perilous situation on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday she was floated to within a short distance of the harbour mouth, where at the fall of the tide she was moored. The sea becoming rough in the night, she broke from her hawser and got adrift. On Thursday morning she was found close to a well-known rock in the bay called the Rocquetier, where she remained some time, but was expected to be brought into harbour at the next tide'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Wreck of 'The Amelia' on the Hermitage Rocks, Jersey, 1856" is an evocative image that captures the raw power of nature and the unpredictability of the sea. The photograph, taken from an unknown creator, depicts the stranded barque Amelia, battered against the rocks of Hermitage in Jersey, Channel Islands. The coastline of Jersey, with its intricate network of rocks, banks, and shoals, has long been a treacherous destination for seafarers. Despite the sheltered bays and coves offering good anchorage, the unforgiving waters have claimed numerous vessels throughout history. The barque Amelia, a merchant ship, was one such unfortunate vessel. Hourly anticipated to break apart, the Amelia clung precariously to the rocks, her masts and rigging a testament to the relentless force of the waves. Yet, against all odds, the vessel was miraculously saved when the weather suddenly changed, allowing it to be extricated from its perilous situation on Tuesday evening. The Amelia was then floated to a short distance from the harbor mouth and moored. However, the respite was short-lived. As the sea grew rough in the night, the vessel broke free from its hawser and went adrift. By Thursday morning, the Amelia was found close to a well-known rock in the bay called the Rocquetier, where it remained for some time before being expected to be brought into harbor at the next tide. This haunting image serves as a reminder of the capricious nature of the sea and the courage and resilience of those who navigate its depths. The exact creator of this photograph remains unknown, but the poignant scene it captures is a testament to the enduring allure of maritime history.
