The "Wou-wou", or silvery gibbons, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The " Wou-wou", or silvery gibbons, 1845. The " Wou-Wou" or " Moloch, "...is a native of Malacca. It derives its specific name from its peculiar cry, which is a gutteral scream resembling, according to the natives, the sound " wou-wou" ; is very loud, and may be often heard resounding at vast distances through the mighty forests...Their diet is composed of lettuces, potatoes, bread, oranges, apples, &c.; they will drink milk, tea, or chocolate, but no beer or fermented liquors, being in this respect of far more temperate habits than the Chimpanzees or Orang-Outangs...They are seen to the greatest advantage when amusing themselves among the ropes with which their apartment is furnished - their long arms and extreme tenacity of grasp enabling them to spring from one cord to the other with surprising confidence, and with almost bird-like velocity. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enchanting "Wou-wou" also known as silvery gibbons, in 1845. The creator of this mesmerizing image remains unknown, but their talent for capturing the beauty and essence of these creatures is undeniable. The Wou-wou, native to Malacca, derives its name from its distinctive cry that resembles a guttural scream - a sound often described by locals as "wou-wou". This cry echoes through the vast forests, reaching great distances with its resounding volume. In terms of diet, these graceful animals have rather temperate habits compared to their primate counterparts such as Chimpanzees or Orang-Outangs. Their meals consist of lettuces, potatoes, bread, oranges, apples and more. While they enjoy milk, tea or chocolate for beverages; they abstain from beer and fermented liquors. One can witness the true magnificence of these silvery gibbons when observing them playfully swinging among ropes within their furnished enclosure. With their long arms and remarkable grip strength, they effortlessly leap from one cord to another with astonishing confidence akin to birds in flight. This particular photograph was featured in the Illustrated London News back in 1845 (Volume VII). It serves as a testament to both the natural wonders found across our planet and the artistic skill required to capture such moments on film.
