The Wild Bunch, American outlaw gang, 1901 (1954)
The Wild Bunch, American outlaw gang, 1901 (1954). Left to right, standing, William Carver (News Carver), Harvey Logan (Kid Curry); sitting, Harry Longabaugh (Sundance Kid), Ben Kilpatrick (The Tall Texan), Robert LeRoy Parker (Butch Cassidy). The gang operated out of the Hole-in-the-Wall Pass in Wyoming, a notorious haunt of outlaw groups, between 1889 and 1901 robbing trains and banks across the West. Their activities came to an end in 1901. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid emigrated to South America (they are said to have been killed by Bolivian police after a robbery in 1908), Carver was killed in a shootout with lawmen, and Kilpatrick was captured in Tennessee and sentenced to 20 years in jail. Kid Curry, the most notorious member of the gang in terms of the number of people he killed, was shot and killed in a gunfight with lawmen in Colorado in 1904. Kilpatrick was released from prison in 1911 but was shot and killed the following year while robbing a train near Sanderson, Texas. (Colorised black and white print)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the notorious era of the Wild West, showcasing "The Wild Bunch" an American outlaw gang that struck fear into the hearts of many. Standing left to right, we see William Carver, known as News Carver, and Harvey Logan, famously called Kid Curry. Sitting confidently are Harry Longabaugh, better known as Sundance Kid; Ben Kilpatrick, recognized as The Tall Texan; and Robert LeRoy Parker, famously referred to as Butch Cassidy. Operating from Wyoming's infamous Hole-in-the-Wall Pass between 1889 and 1901, this audacious gang specialized in robbing trains and banks across the vast Western frontier. However, their reign of terror eventually came to an end in 1901. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid chose a path of exile in South America but met their tragic fate at the hands of Bolivian police during a robbery in 1908. Carver met his demise in a fierce shootout with lawmen while Kilpatrick was captured in Tennessee and sentenced to two decades behind bars. Notably ruthless within the gang was Kid Curry who claimed numerous lives before meeting his own violent end during a gunfight with law enforcement officers in Colorado in 1904. Although Kilpatrick regained freedom from prison walls in 1911 after serving his sentence diligently, he too fell victim to his criminal ways when he was fatally shot while attempting another train robbery near Sanderson, Texas just one year later. This colorized print offers us a glimpse into history - an intriguing visual reminder of these daring outlaws whose tales continue to captivate our imaginations today.
