A wig shop, c1780-1825. Creator: Thomas Rowlandson
A wig shop, c1780-1825. The two old ladies examining a girlish headdress displayed by the wigmaker are delightfully satisfied with the model, if one can judge from their expressions. No doubt the wigmaker has convinced them that this special coiffure will reduce their age immeasurably, while the assistant patiently holds a mirror until the critical trying-on moment takes place. Even the poodles head is trimmed in such a way as to resemble his mistress wig. From " The Watercolour Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson from the Albert H. Wiggin Collection in the Boston Public Library" with commentary by Arthur W. Heintzelman. [Watson-Guptill Publications, Inc. New York, 1947]

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming print by Thomas Rowlandson, we are transported back to a wig shop in the late 18th to early 19th century. The scene is filled with delightful details that capture the essence of the era. Two elderly ladies stand at the center, their expressions radiating satisfaction as they examine a girlish headdress displayed by the wigmaker. It seems that he has successfully convinced them that this special coiffure will miraculously reduce their age. Meanwhile, an assistant patiently holds a mirror, eagerly awaiting the critical trying-on moment. Even more amusingly, we notice that one of the poodles in the shop has its head trimmed to resemble its mistress's wig. This whimsical touch adds an extra layer of humor and highlights how deeply entrenched wigs were in society during this time. Rowlandson's attention to detail extends beyond just capturing human subjects; he also expertly portrays various elements within the shop itself. Feathered hats and other accessories adorn shelves while mirrors line the walls, reflecting both customers and employees alike. Through his satirical lens, Rowlandson offers us a glimpse into not only fashion trends but also societal norms and attitudes towards vanity during this period. This print serves as a testament to his skillful caricature style and his ability to bring historical scenes to life with wit and charm.
