EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 16th-century print depicts a white cabbage (Brassica oleracea), a common vegetable in Europe during the Renaissance period. The illustration was created by the Flemish botanist and artist Anselmus de Boodt (1550-1632) and the Flemish engraver Elias Verhulst (1551-1613). Commissioned by Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), Holy Roman Emperor, this artwork is a testament to the natural history and scientific curiosity of the time. The print is executed in a combination of chalk, ink, and brush, with meticulous attention to detail. Anselmus de Boodt, a renowned scholar and botanist, carefully depicted the cabbage's textured leaves, veins, and the intricate patterns on its surface. The use of color and shading adds depth and dimension to the illustration, making it a visual feast for the eyes. The scene is set against a plain background, allowing the cabbage to take center stage. The lettering, written in Latin, identifies the plant as Brassica oleracea and provides additional information about its cultivation and uses. The print is a prime example of the Netherlandish artistic tradition, which flourished during the 16th and 17th centuries in the Low Countries. This artwork is a valuable addition to any natural history or botanical collection and provides a glimpse into the scientific and artistic achievements of the early modern period. It is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is a must-see for anyone interested in the history of botany, art, or European culture.
