EDITORS COMMENTS
Welwyn," the elegant Georgian Revival house located at 100 Crescent Beach Road in Glen Cove, New York, was designed by Babb, Cook & Welsh between 1904 and 1906. This stunning residence, captured in this c.1918 photograph by renowned American photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, underwent alterations by Delano & Aldrich in the mid-1910s. The estate's breathtaking landscape was the collaborative work of Martha Brookes Hutcheson and James Leal Greenleaf between 1911 and 1913. The image showcases the picturesque front facade of "Welwyn," adorned with an array of vibrant flowers and lush greenery. The meticulously designed flowerbeds, bursting with color, frame the entrance, leading the eye to the grand sun dial situated atop the house. The sun dial, a classic element of Georgian architecture, adds a touch of sophistication and timeless charm to the estate. Martha Brookes Hutcheson, a pioneer in American landscape gardening, and James Leal Greenleaf, a renowned landscape architect, worked together to create a harmonious blend of nature and artistry within the grounds of "Welwyn." Their vision transformed the estate into a living work of art, with every detail carefully considered to enhance the beauty and serenity of the property. This photograph, taken by Frances Benjamin Johnston, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and elegance of the early 20th-century American estate, showcasing the exquisite marriage of architecture and landscape design.
