Wellington Monument, London, c1910. Creator: Unknown
Wellington Monument, London, c1910. Bronze equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington at Hyde Park Corner, designed in 1888 by Joseph Edgar Boehm. On the right is the Wellington Arch, a triumphal arch designed by Decimus Burton and built 1826-1830. It once supported an earlier equestrian statue of the Duke which was removed in 1882-1883 as it was considered to be too large for the arch, and also, by some, too vulgar. Postcard

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Wellington Monument in London, circa 1910. The bronze equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington stands proudly at Hyde Park Corner, designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm in 1888. On the right side of the image, we see the magnificent Wellington Arch, a triumphal arch created by Decimus Burton between 1826 and 1830. The photograph showcases both architectural marvels against a backdrop of history. It is fascinating to note that an earlier equestrian statue of the Duke once adorned the arch but was removed in 1882-1883 due to its perceived size and vulgarity. The image transports us back to a time when communication relied on postcards like this one. The postcard format adds charm and nostalgia to this remarkable piece of art captured by an unknown creator. As we admire this snapshot from over a century ago, it reminds us not only of Britain's rich heritage but also pays tribute to Sir Arthur Wellesley, known as the Iron Duke. His heroism and leadership during military campaigns earned him legendary status within British society. This print serves as a visual testament to Wellington's enduring legacy while offering us glimpses into London's past landscape and royal connections. It invites contemplation about our own place within history and sparks curiosity about those who came before us.
