Wealth, 1640. Artist: Simon Vouet

Wealth, 1640. A large serpentine figure of a woman draped in fabric is seated in front of an imposing architectural background. She is carrying a child in her arms while gazing at another standing close by, who is proffering a fistful of jewels. At her feet, two masterly still lifes show an open book and a heap of dishes and vases made of silver and gold plate, one of which is decorated with the story of Apollo and Daphne. For this personification of Wealth, Vouet refers, like most of his contemporaries, to the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa - a work published in the late sixteenth century that catalogued the representation of allegorical figures, giving them very precise attributes. From the collection of the Louvre Museum, Paris, France

Wealth, 1640

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Simon Vouet is a captivating oil painting that showcases the opulence and abundance associated with wealth during the Baroque era. The central figure of this allegorical representation is a large serpentine woman draped in luxurious fabric, seated against an imposing architectural backdrop. With a child cradled in her arms, she gazes at another standing close by who offers her a fistful of dazzling jewels. Vouet's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the two masterly still lifes depicted at the woman's feet. An open book symbolizes knowledge and education while a heap of exquisite dishes and vases made of silver and gold plate represent material prosperity. One vase even features intricate depictions from the mythological story of Apollo and Daphne. Drawing inspiration from Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, Vouet skillfully portrays Wealth as an allegorical figure with precise attributes that were commonly used during his time. This remarkable artwork now resides within the esteemed collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Through this mesmerizing composition, Vouet invites viewers to contemplate the concept of wealth and its multifaceted nature. It serves as both a celebration of material riches but also prompts reflection on their potential spiritual or intellectual value. "Wealth, 1640" encapsulates the grandeur and allure associated with wealth during the seventeenth century while showcasing Vouet's mastery as one of France's prominent Baroque artists.
