On the Way to the Philadelphia Exhibition, 1876. Creator: C.R
On the Way to the Philadelphia Exhibition, 1876. Bringing mails on board; smoking saloon; playing quoits; the Belle of the voyage; New York pilot boat in sight...[View of] the upper deck of the Adriatic, with the passengers playing at the amusing game of quoits. The lady who appears just throwing was a splendid shot, and succeeded in beating most of the gentlemen. Flirting and love-making appeared to be the orthodox diversions in crossing the Atlantic. Medical advice also suggests flirting; but in reality the doctor is consoling a lady who has been suffering the horrors of sea-sickness pretty severely. By the lighting-up of the face we should imagine that she quite approves of the remedy: champagne was evidently recommended. There is always, we are told, a "Belle of the Voyage", and this trip was most fortunate in its "belle, " as proved by the amount of attention showered upon her'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
On the Way to the Philadelphia Exhibition, 1876: A Voyage Across the Atlantic in the 'Adriatic' This photograph, titled "On the Way to the Philadelphia Exhibition, 1876," offers a glimpse into the past, depicting the upper deck of the luxurious ocean liner, the 'Adriatic.' The image, created by the renowned illustrator C.R, was published in the prestigious 'Illustrated London News' in 1876. The photograph captures the passengers' leisurely pursuits during their transatlantic journey. In the foreground, a group of passengers is engrossed in the game of quoits, a popular pastime during sea voyages. The lady in the center, with an elegant dress and a determined expression, skillfully throws the quoit, outperforming most of the men. Flirting and romantic encounters were common diversions during long sea voyages, as evidenced by the couple in the lower left corner of the photograph. The doctor, seen consoling a seasick lady, is not just offering medical advice but also providing emotional support. The lady, with a relieved expression on her face, seems to be enjoying the doctor's company, perhaps even more than the champagne he is holding. The 'Belle of the Voyage' is a well-known maritime term for the most attractive woman on board. This voyage was particularly fortunate in this regard, as evidenced by the attention showered upon her. The 'Adriatic' was a symbol of luxury and elegance, and this photograph captures the spirit of the voyage, offering a glimpse into the past and the social norms of the time.
