EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Battle of Waterloo, which took place on 18 June 1815 near present-day Waterloo in Belgium. The battle marked a significant turning point in European history as it brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars. In this typogravure print, created by H Chartier and featured in William Milligan Sloane's Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Volume IV (1896), we witness the clash between two mighty armies. On one side stands Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte leading his French army, while on the other side are the forces of the Seventh Coalition. Commanded by the Duke of Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, Prince of Wahlstatt, these Allied troops include a British-led army and a Prussian force. The intensity and chaos of warfare are vividly depicted through Henri Georges Jacques Chartier's masterful use of color. The image portrays soldiers charging fearlessly into battle with their bayonets fixed and flags flying high. It is a testament to both the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by those who fought during this historic conflict. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from our past, let us remember that it was here at Waterloo where destinies were shaped and empires fell.
