Watering-Places of England - Torquay, from the Road ot Dartmouth, 1850. Creator: Edmund Evans
Watering-Places of England - Torquay, from the Road ot Dartmouth, 1850. "The general character of the climate of this coast is soft and humid. Torquay is certainly drier than the other places, and almost entirely free from fogs. This drier state of the atmosphere probably arises in part from the limestone rocks, which are confined to the neighbourhood of this place, and partly from its position between the two streams, the Dart and the Teign, by which the rain is in some degree attracted. Torquay is also remarkably protected from the northeast winds, the great evil of our spring climate. It is likewise well sheltered from the north-west. This protection from winds extends also over a very considerable tract of beautiful country, abounding in every variety of landscape, so that there is scarcely a wind that blows from which the invalid will not be able to find a shelter for exercise, either on foot or horseback". From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Torquay, Devon, England, 1850: A Scenic Retreat from the Elements This image of Torquay, Devon, England, was produced by renowned English photographer Edmund Evans in 1850. The photograph, titled 'Watering-Places of England - Torquay, from the Road ot Dartmouth,' offers a picturesque view of the coastal town, which was renowned for its health-giving properties during the Victorian era. Torquay, situated between the rivers Dart and Teign, boasts a mild and humid climate, making it a popular destination for those seeking relief from various ailments. The general climate of the English coast in this era was characterized by softness and humidity, with frequent fogs. However, Torquay stood out for its relative dryness and freedom from fogs, which was attributed to the presence of limestone rocks and its position between the two rivers. The town's favorable climate was further enhanced by its protection from prevailing winds. Torquay was shielded from the northeast winds, which were a significant source of discomfort during the spring season. Additionally, it was sheltered from the northwest winds, ensuring that visitors could enjoy outdoor activities, such as walking or horseback riding, regardless of the wind direction. The beautiful, well-sheltered countryside surrounding Torquay offered a vast array of landscapes, ensuring that there was always a suitable location for those seeking refuge from the wind. This protection from the elements extended over a considerable area, making Torquay an ideal destination for those seeking a respite from the rigors of everyday life and the health benefits of a coastal retreat.
