Warrior Minamoto Raiko and the Earth Spider
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a stunning triptych woodblock print created by the renowned Japanese artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi in the mid-1840s. This artwork, a masterpiece of the Edo period, is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). The center panel of the print features Minamoto Raiko, a legendary regent and monk, depicted in a serene posture with his legs crossed, holding a fan in his hand. He is deep in thought, seemingly lost in a dream. The surrounding panels, however, introduce an element of surrealism and the uncanny. In the left panel, a colossal Earth Spider, with its eight long legs spread wide, looms over Minamoto Raiko. Its eyes gleam with an otherworldly intensity, and its fangs are bared, hinting at a potential threat. Yet, Minamoto Raiko remains unperturbed, seemingly in communion with the monster. The right panel shows another strange creature, a monster with the body of a man and the head of a tiger, holding a teacup. The creature's eyes are closed, and it appears to be in a tranquil state, as if sharing a moment of peace with Minamoto Raiko. This triptych, with its blend of the mundane and the fantastical, showcases the unique artistic vision of Utagawa Kuniyoshi during the Nineteenth Century. The rich colors and intricate details of the print transport us to a world of myth and legend, a testament to the enduring heritage of Japanese art.
