The War in the Herzegovina: sketches by our special artist, 1876. Creator: Unknown
The War in the Herzegovina: sketches by our special artist, 1876....some ordinary incidents and habits of campaigning life during the irregular warfare of the past six months in those rugged highlands: sketching and writing under difficulties; grinding coffee; weighing wine; a drink of water; firing heard, is it safe to advance?; is the road clear; a hare shot before a Turkish fortress...It is now to be expected that hostilities between the Turks and the insurgents of Herzegovina will be stopped very shortly, for the Sultan actually signed...a document consenting to the scheme of conciliation proposed by the Austrian Government with the approval of the other great Powers...The whole Turkish force in Herzegovina available for active operations does not exceed 8000 men, who are unpaid and badly fed. On the side of the insurgents there are many scattered bands...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, titled 'The War in Herzegovina: sketches by our special artist, 1876,' offers a glimpse into the daily life of war correspondents during the irregular warfare in the rugged highlands of Herzegovina. The image, created by an unknown artist, depicts several scenes of campaigning life, including sketching and writing under challenging conditions, grinding coffee, weighing wine, and taking a drink of water. In the background, the sound of gunfire can be heard, raising questions about the safety of advancing and the clearance of the road. At the time this photograph was taken, it was anticipated that the hostilities between the Turks and the insurgents of Herzegovina would soon come to an end. The Sultan had signed a document consenting to the conciliation scheme proposed by the Austrian Government, with the approval of other great powers. The Turkish force in Herzegovina, available for active operations, numbered only 8,000 men, who were unpaid and poorly fed. On the other hand, the insurgents had numerous scattered bands, making the outcome of the conflict uncertain. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and uncertainties faced by war correspondents during times of conflict. The artist's skillful depiction of the scene transports us back to the late 19th century, offering a unique perspective on the daily struggles and hardships of those reporting on the front lines.
