Volunteer fete at Crown, Point, near Norwich: the Review, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Volunteer fete given by Mr. Harvey, the High Sheriff of Norfolk, at Crown Point, near Norwich: the Review, 1862. A grand stand 70ft. long, and calculated to accommodate 500 ladies and gentlemen, was erected for the convenience of Mr. Harvey's specially-invited guests...Lieut.-Colonel Custance, of the West Norfolk Militia, commanded the right, and Lieut.-Colonel Astley the left, wing, while the whole force was under the general direction of Major-General Sir Archdale Wilson, of Delhi...When at last the signal was given to proceed with the evolutions, the troops formed contiguous columns at quarter distance, deployed into line, and threw out skirmishers...[who, ] after firing a few volleys, were recalled, and the battalions commenced file-firing...They then advanced, and the whole force formed square to resist cavalry, firing from right of faces several ringing volleys. The cavalry advanced and charged a supposed enemy in the south-west of the parade-ground, over which they rushed - scarlet flashing and sabres clattering - with great impetuosity...Then there was more file and volley filing, and more deploying, the whole concluding with the customary marching past the inspecting officer, headed by the cavalry'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Volunteer Fete held at Crown Point, near Norwich, in 1862. The event was graciously hosted by Mr. Harvey, the High Sheriff of Norfolk, and attracted a large crowd of distinguished guests. A grandstand, 70ft. long, was erected to accommodate up to 500 ladies and gentlemen, providing an excellent vantage point to witness the military drills and evolutions. Lieutenant-Colonel Custance commanded the right wing, and Lieutenant-Colonel Astley led the left, with Major-General Sir Archdale Wilson of Delhi overseeing the entire operation. The troops, dressed in their finest uniforms, were poised and ready to demonstrate their military prowess. As the signal was given, the troops formed contiguous columns and deployed into line, throwing out skirmishers who fired a few volleys before being recalled. The battalions then commenced file-firing, followed by advancing and forming a square to resist cavalry attacks. The cavalry, with their scarlet uniforms flashing and sabres clattering, charged a supposed enemy in the south-west of the parade-ground. The day was filled with various military maneuvers, including more file and volley firing, deploying, and the final marching past the inspecting officer. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the precision and discipline of the Volunteer Force during this grand event at Crown Point, Norwich, in 1862.
